AMOUNT: $5,000 to study or intern abroad ($8,000 if studying Critical Need Language)

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at time of application or during the term abroad. 

  • Applying to a study abroad or internship abroad eligible for credit

  • Studying or interning abroad for at least four weeks in one country and no more than one academic year

  • Studying or interning abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the US Department of State's current Travel Warning list

  3. Submit online certifications from the applicant's study abroad and financial aid adviser

Timeline:

spring programs

  • Mid-August: Online application opens
  • October 6: Student deadline for submission of online application
  • Late November: All applicants are notified of the status of their application via email
  • December/January: Scholarship recipients must accept/decline their award

Summer programs (Early application)

  • Mid-August: Online application opens
  • October 6: Student deadline for submission of online application
  • Late February: All applicants are notified of the status of their application via email
  • February/March: Scholarship recipients must accept/decline their award
