Capital Encounter is a one-week program, targeted to students who cannot serve a regular, full semesterinternship in Washington, D.C. Nine to eleven students travel with Professor Tim Chambless to Washington, D.C. in the Spring Semester of each year. Students who engage in this whirlwind of activity get to:

  • Spend an hour with a U.S. Supreme Court Justice
  • Meet with Utah’s Congressional Delegation
  • Discuss foreign policy with a former National Security Advisor
  • Interact with professional Washington, D.C. lobbyists
  • Question prominent national journalists
  • Tour the White House, Treasury Building and Library of Congress
  • Have VIP tours of U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Capitol Building
  • See the Holocaust and Smithsonian Museums
  • Visit Gettysburg National Battlefield in Pennsylvania
  • Tour Arlington National Cemetery and the historic National Mall
  • Visit National Public Radio, C-SPAN, and the Newseum
  • Visit CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia

The Hinckley Institute of Politics will cover program fees and housing. Selected students will also receive $200 to help with transportation, food, and other expenses. Students are responsible for payment of airline tickets, incidental expenses, and tuition costs for the required two credit hours. A non-refundable registration fee of $50 and a secured airline ticket will be required upon acceptance into this one-week seminar. Students will stay at the Consulate Apartments, located in Downtown D.C.
