Q: When did you graduate?

I graduated in 2016 with a degree in political science and I will graduate in 2017 with my master’s in public policy.

Q: Tell us about your Hinckley experiences?

I was enrolled in the Hinckley Institute nearly every semester during my undergraduate career. I was introduced during my freshman year when I interned at the Governor’s Office. After this initial experience, I was hooked. I went on to intern for Congressman Chris Stewart, the Salt Lake Chamber, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Proposition 1 Campaign. I also participated in the Senator Bennet Seminar and Forum Series courses and served as a Hinckley Ambassador in 2015.

Q: What is your favorite Hinckley memory?

I cannot imagine my undergraduate career without the Hinckley Institute. By far, my favorite memories were those working for the Salt Lake Chamber during the legislative session. I enjoy the fast pace atmosphere of state-level politics.

Q: How did the Hinckley impact your undergraduate education?

Ultimately, my opportunities at the Hinckley Institute helped affirm that I wanted to pursue a career path in public policy. The most valuable lessons I learned during my undergraduate career took place during my internships. Seeing effective issue advocacy firsthand enhanced what I was learning in the classroom. Specifically, my internship experience helped me to better understand the business perspective of public policy, which was an interest I acquired through my work experiences and that I hope to focus on in the future.

Q: How did the Hinckley impact your competitiveness for your career?

The opportunities provided by the Hinckley Institute led me to my first job at the Salt Lake Chamber as a Public Policy Fellow. And most notably, gave me the work experience I needed to be accepted into a dual enrollment program that enabled me to work on my master’s in public policy during my undergraduate career.

My time spent with the Hinckley Institute has continued to help me stand out. Most recently, I was selected for an opportunity with Chevron’s Government Affairs team. Overall, the Hinckley has done more than just helped me on paper, it has given me the knowledge to succeed in my master's program and in the workplace of a renowned global company.
