HELP International seeks innovative social entrepreneurs to join a team of young adults to fight poverty through sustainable development projects. Interns will conduct a needs assessment in the community and then work with local organizations to develop appropriate interventions. Interns are encouraged to utilize the skills and knowledge gained in their major and prior experience to uniquely meet identified needs. Every project implemented by HELP is done so in partnership with a local organization to ensure sustainability.


Projects generally fall within three core competency areas including public health, education, and entrepreneurship/business. Examples of past projects include teacher trainings, mentoring impoverished populations in starting income-generating businesses, organizing rural health clinics, and developing health education curriculum for local organizations. Interns through the Hinckley Institute will be able to work as project leads and will be responsible for overall project development and leading their peers in implementation. Interns will receive support and mentoring from in-country HELP staff and partners. More information can be found at 



There is no language requirement. 


Housing, food, training, program support, and international insurance are provided as part of the program fee.

International interns are eligible to apply for the Hinckley Global Scholarship offered through the Hinckley Institute. Information can be found here. The Hinckley Institute also offers a low-interest loan program found here. In addition to funding through the Hinckley Institute, scholarships are available through the Center for Learning Abroad.


Internship dates may vary depending upon location but are based around the academic calendar:

  • Fall Semester: September-December
  • Spring Semester: January-April
  • Summer Semester: May-August


Students are required to register for a minimum of 3 HNKLY credit hours and a maximum of 12. International interns are required to submit 4 reflections and 10 weekly updates throughout the semester, as well as write a final policy paper, which is due 4 weeks after the end of the semester.


Students are required to attend a pre-departure orientation, which provides cultural and safety training and explanation of academic requirements. Students also meet with the program manager upon returning from the internship.
