Born and raised in Salt Lake and an avid “Utah Man”, Buhler graduated from the University of Utah with dual degrees in History and Political Science. He later completed a Ph.D. from the University of Utah. His academic journey and passion for politics laid the foundation for a political career that would span decades and touch the lives of virtually every Utahn.
As a professor of political science at the University of Utah from 1990 to 2006, Buhler was more than just an educator, he became a mentor and real champion for his students. He made it a point to bring his real-world political experience into the classroom; from his time served as executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce, a member of Governor Bangeter’s staff, state senator, and to his years as a Salt Lake City Councilman. His unabashed nature and ability to connect policy with people made him a beloved figure among students and colleagues.
In 2012, Buhler was appointed Commissioner of Higher Education by the Utah State Board of Regents, a role he dutifully served in until 2019. During his tenure, he led Utah’s public colleges, universities, and technical institutes through a period of strategic growth, innovation, and increased access. He championed removing barriers to entry, expanded educational pathways, developed workforce development initiatives, and prioritized outreach and involvement to underserved communities. His vision was clear: every Utah student should have access to the education they need to succeed.
Dave was known for his generosity, humility, and dedication to serving the people around him. He always found time to mentor young leaders, support colleagues, and serve his community. Whether in the classroom, the Capitol, or his neighborhood, he led with integrity and heart.
“Dave Buhler’s tenure at the University of Utah was marked by a rare blend of intellect, humility, and unwavering dedication to students,” said Hinckley Director Jason Perry. “He believed deeply in the power of public service and worked tirelessly to ensure that every student had the opportunity to engage meaningfully in the political process. Dave was a master bridge-builder. His leadership, wherever he served, was marked by collaboration and compassion. He always worked across political lines, earning respect from both Republicans and Democrats. His measured tone and deep commitment to public service forged partnerships between higher education and industry.
Dave Buhler’s legacy lives on in the thousands of students whose lives he touched, the policies he shaped, and the institutions he strengthened.
