Join us for a talk with Professor Harry Gould from Florida International University, whose research explores how ideas about prudence (the practice of good judgment and knowing how to act appropriately in complex situations) have shaped politics and international relations through history.

The concept of prudence finds application in most fields of human endeavor, but it is not always easy to identify commonalities among the various ways it is defined and conceptualized. Many authors decry this; some look back to what they consider the true, originary meaning from which all others have deviated. Others seek to stipulate an operational definition that can be used for evaluative purposes across fields. In his forthcoming book, Professor Gould seeks to deflate both views by treating the histories of the differing ways the concept of prudence has been used on their own terms. The important questions are not whose definition or which definition is right, but what the stories about why differing definitions found purchase in different times and places can tell us today.
