Alumni Spotlight

Conor Lyne has accomplished a great deal thus far in his relatively short professional career. His strong work ethic and determination has served him well in his career and has led to impressive accomplishments in his personal life as well.

He is no stranger to dedication and hard work and while studying as an undergraduate at the University of Utah, the Hinckley Institute proved to be a great way for Lyne to channel his passion and drive and helped him hone his communication and networking skills.

Lyne’s first Hinckley experience and first internship as a student was working for the Utah Governor’s office.

It was an incredible experience to work alongside some of the highest officials in government. The internship gave me a foundational understanding of state politics, helped me gain respect for all public servants, and increased my communication skills that I'd later take to other internships and career positions.

Lyne also remembers applying for several scholarships through the Hinckley Institute. He found the application processes for these prestigious awards to be valuable as they helped him improve his writing and interviewing skills and helped him to create long-term relationships that he continues to maintain to this day.

The opportunity and added assistance from Hinckley for such prestigious awards not only valued the work I did as a student, but helped me show academics and professionals how that work would be valuable to their organizations.

When reflecting on all his Hinckley experiences at the U, the Oxford Consortium easily stands out as Lyne’s favorite. He was selected by the University to represent the U at the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights at Oxford University in England.

Meeting such a diverse set of thinkers in arguably the world's most prestigious university was the highlight of my Hinckley experience. We were able to listen to some of the world's leaders in human rights, from an academic lens, an NGO lens, and even a military one. We also got to experience what it's like as a student at Oxford, living directly in the dormitories, visiting the local haunts, and even attending a black-tie ball to close out the week. It was truly one of the best experiences of my undergraduate career, and perhaps one day I'll return to Oxford as a student myself!

Lyne graduated from the U in 2017 with an Honors Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and a minor in Political Science. Lyne felt prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation because of his varied Hinckley experiences. Not only did they provide him with valuable professional experience, he also gained personal and professional communication skills which served him well in employer interviews and throughout the first few years of his career.

He currently works in finance in New York City and is also pursuing photography. His love for photography and travel has taken him around the world and he has thus far traveled to a total of 63 countries.

In addition to these impressive accomplishments, Lyne, a lifelong, dedicated skier, achieved his dream of competing for Ireland in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia!

With so many exciting experiences already under his belt, we can’t wait to see what Lyne will accomplish next.
