A Living Learning Community for Civically Engaged Students Committed to Public Service

The Hinckley Leadership Community aims to bring together a cohort of students with shared interests, goals, or experiences and provide them with comprehensive academic and professional development opportunities.

This experience includes $17,000 of financial support for each participant.

How does the scholarship work?

Students selected to live in the Hinckley Leadership Community within the Ivory University House complex are automatically awarded $17,000 in scholarship money. The selection process is overseen by the Hinckley Institute Director and the funding is generously donated by the Clark and Christine Ivory Foundation. 

Scholarship Details:

$8,500 is a scholarship for housing and is automatically applied towards housing costs at the Ivory University House. Resident leases are for 12 months. 

The other half of the scholarship - $8,500 is an academic scholarship. It is automatically applied towards tuition and fees. This portion of the scholarship is divided equally between fall and spring semesters. 

Private Rooms - Integrated Community

The Ivory University House is where comfort, security, and a sense of belonging converge. Students in the Hinckley Leadership Community live in spacious studio apartments at Ivory University House. They are conveniently located a short walk from Campus, the Student Life Center, and Trax line.

Hinckley Leadership Community members build connections with one another through monthly professional development classes with community leaders, participation in classes focused on civic engagement and leadership, and internships through the Hinckley Institute.

Eligibility and Requirements

Eligibility

The Hinckley Institute of Politics will award this scholarship to outstanding students who meet the following criteria:

Degree-seeking student at the University of Utah.

Strong academic standing in any academic major at the University of Utah.

Demonstrate ongoing commitment to active citizenship and public service.

Preference for students who have demonstrated work experience and/or experience with civic engagement including during high school, college, gap year, etc.

 

Requirements

Recipients of the Hinckley Director’s Housing and Academic Scholarship will fulfill the follow requirements over the course of the year:

Fall 2024 - enroll in POLS 3910 (Political Forum Series) or POLS 3160 (Campaign Management)

Spring 2025 - participate in a Hinckley Legislative Internship, Local Internship, or enroll in POLS 4914 (Capital Encounter)

All semesters - attend monthly networking/leadership sessions

Students living in Ivory University House agree to live according to a core value agreement.
