Alumni Spotlight

Janice Ugaki is a leader in the marketing and technology fields. She has built an impressive career over the last 30 years and she got her start as a student at the University of Utah. Throughout her time at the U, Ugaki completed 3 internships through the Hinckley Institute. She interned locally with the Utah Governor’s Office, and interned in D.C. twice, working with the U.S. Supreme Court and with the U.S. Department of State. Ugaki has very fond memories of her time as a Hinckley intern and her experiences were foundational to the rest of her academic and professional career.

Her impressive academic background at the U made her a great candidate for the prestigious Truman Scholarship, which aims to identify and reward future public service leaders. The Hinckley Institute guided Ugaki through the rigorous application process and after a lengthy interview and selection process, Ugaki was named as a Truman Scholar in 1990.

Ugaki graduated summa cum laude from the U in 1992 with an Honors B.S. in Finance, an Honors B.A. in Politics and a minor in Japanese.

Since graduating from the U, Ugaki has gone on to have an incredibly impressive academic and professional career. She attended Harvard Law School and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship during her first year. During her year at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, she read for a Doctorate in Philosophy in Japanese Politics.

She has since worked as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Utah, and has sat on the boards of many companies and organizations, including Intermountain Health Enterprise Board, Zions Bank Advisory Board, Association of American Rhodes Scholars, and Harvard Alumni Association of Utah. She currently serves as the Co-Founder and President of Firmseek, an award-winning strategic marketing and technology company in Washington, D.C.
