The University of Utah's Hinckley Institute sends more than 350 exceptional students annually to more than 50 countries and provides them with unparalleled training, academic credit, and even funding support.

When accepting students into our program, we look for young adults who are highly driven, hard-working, conscientious, and personable. 


Since the Hinckley Institute sends interns spring, summer, and fall semesters, we can supply you with interns year-round.


Host Office Qualifications 

Salt Lake City Offices

  • Bring intern on for a minimum of 10 hours/week for at least 3.5 months.

    • Interns must track their hours on a log sheet that their direct supervisor must sign at the end of the semester.

  • Duties must be substantive, eg. research, writing, administrative.

  • Host office must have a dedicated work space; exceptions can be made for political campaigns.

National & Global Offices

  • Bring intern on full-time (35 hours/week or more) for at least 3 months

  • Duties must be substantive, eg. research, writing, administrative

Sample Internship Projects

Hinckley Interns are required to enroll for academic credit for the internship and earn that credit by demonstrating application of on-campus learning within your organization and cultural context. Fitting projects include the following:

Program Design

  • Reach out to a community partner and work together to create a program.

  • Work with stakeholders to design a plan with implementation timelines and indicators of success.

  • Administer a survey to provide feedback. Analyze the data analysis and write a report summarizing the findings and suggestions for improvement.

  • Develop and administer an assessment plan.

  • Conduct a comprehensive program evaluation and write a report about the findings.

  • Work with supervisor to develop a strategic plan that includes input from stakeholders, identifies proprieties, and includes timelines and indicators.

Resource Generation

  • Create a flyer marketing the services provided by the host organization for the local community.

  • Update the host organization’s website.

  • Research potential donors.

  • Write a report with recommendations about the use of social media.

  • Create a marketing presentation.

  • Create a database and collect information on potential partners.

  • Design a strategic plan to recruit volunteers.

  • Set up and manage social media tools.

  • Arrange details, logistics, and execution for an event.

Resource Management

  • Manage the budget for a complex project.

  • Design and execute a training program.

  • Create a database of local resources.

  • Develop, implement, and organize an improved record-keeping system.

Office Assistance

  • Provide research, administrative support and willingness to help with office needs.

  • Participate in meetings, luncheons, and events as needed.

  • Participate in various capacities as needed (i.e. provide tours, attend or assist with committees, technical assistance, etc.)

Best Host Office Practices  (NACE, 2014)

  • Provide interns with real work assignments. Interns should be doing work related to their major; find the work challenging, and recognized by the organization as valuable.

  • Get prepared before intern arrives. Along with creating an orientation also coordinate parking, work space, schedule, name badge. Introduce intern and help them feel part of the team by inviting them to staff meetings, and lunch.

  • Hold orientations for all involved. Managers, mentors, and students meet to be on the same page in regards to expectations and role definition. Provide clear information regarding company culture, work expectations, and intern responsibilities. Provide a timeline. This is crucial as most internships are only about 12 weeks in length.

  • Provide Interns with handbooks or web site. This serves not only as a guide but can also answer questions and communicate rules.

  • Offer flex-time or student work arrangements. Helps students transition to the workplace and their busy student schedules.

  • Have an intern manager or mentor. Have a dedicated manager on staff or a grad student. Interns need a go to person who is organized, patient and enjoys working with young people and teaching skills. Providing feedback is important.

  • Encourage Team Involvement. Introduce intern to whole organization to provide a bigger picture of company. Expose interns to various levels and disciplines within the organization to help them make connections and gain a larger understanding of how areas of the organization fit and work together.

  • Hold new-hire panels. A great way to showcase an organization to interns as a great place to work.

  • Conduct Focus Groups, surveys, exit interviews. See your organization from the student’s perspective. Focus groups in particular can yield information about what your competitors are doing that students find appealing.

  • Showcase Intern work through presentations and/or expos. Setting up a venue for them to do presentation not only allows them to demonstrate their achievements, but also showcases the internship program to all employees.
